Background Info

How Sahbu Started

Sahbu was born out of a deeply personal experience: when Mitch Weight, the founder, adopted two boys from Liberia, he saw firsthand the immense challenges faced by children in the region. Moved by their story, Mitch created Sahbu, a nonprofit focused on empowering Liberian children by removing them from dangerous labor and placing them in schools. While Mitch also ran a marketing firm, he saw a unique opportunity to build Sahbu’s brand to generate awareness and drive support for his mission.

Phase 1: Define the Problem

Mitch approached the agency where I served as Creative Director, seeking support to develop a compelling investor presentation for Sahbu’s initial pitch. At the time, Sahbu existed as a concept in need of a visual identity and a narrative to inspire action. This engagement sparked the early formation of Sahbu’s brand identity, eventually evolving into a suite of materials tailored to build awareness and foster support.

Phase 2: Strategy & Approach

The Logo

While the original logo was created by Mitch’s brother, Sahbu lacked a fully realized brand identity. We were tasked with building a complete and cohesive visual identity that would embody Sahbu’s mission and engage diverse stakeholders.

A Design Style Sheet

To ensure a consistent brand experience, we developed an initial style sheet that guided the creation of new deliverables, including color palettes, typography, and imagery standards.

Phase 3: How it went

Over the course of six months, we collaborated closely with Sahbu to create a wide range of content and brand elements designed to elevate their mission and amplify their impact.

The new brand identity led to success

At the end of the six-month engagement, Sahbu successfully shipped a 20-ft container of donations to Liberia and doubled the number of children enrolled in school. Our rebranding efforts provided Sahbu with a unified identity and a suite of assets that continue to drive their mission forward.
